Here comes day one of 366 days. It is a leap year.
Jan 1st 2020 here's hoping for some kind of normality!
Happy New Year for starters. Samuel Pepys had a diary. The year he started it, 1660 marked the restoration of the monarchy in England and the return of Charles II as king (1660–85) following the period of Oliver Cromwell’s Commonwealth. It would have been a good thing but he did too much murdering for the English taste. The bishops were restored to Parliament, which established a strict Anglican orthodoxy, this was a bad thing. The reign of James II from 1685 to 1688) marked by an expansion in colonial trade (and rule) as well as the Anglo-Dutch Wars and a revival of drama and literature. Apart from the literature bit, it renewed the gullible subservience of the English to their peers, which is still prevails today. There is definitely something wrong with the English mentality. Maybe they like being told what to do? Who knows.
The most exciting thing I did today apart from wishing my Mum a happy new year, was to go to the shed, choose a piece of wood and a saw, get the drill out, make some holes in the wood, try Astrid's pencils to see of they'd fit but called the whole exercise off because it was impractical. Oh and I refilled the birdseed dispensers. It's only been out a few hours and it's bloody empty again. They can raid someone else's garden for the next few days, we have it all on feeding ourselves never mind those little sparrows.
The football results haven't gone well for my team, three defeats over the Christmas period has been a bit of a disaster.
That's not a real disaster though compared to the two deaths and hundreds of firework related injuries in the Netherlands. It's time they stopped it or at least curtailed them. I've been there and believe me, if you can imagine how a war will sound like on your street, it's like that, some fireworks are like bombs. They break windows, set fire to cars, houses and businesses. The human cost every year is tragic. Some kids are blinded for life, 15 of the 30 taken to Rotterdam hospitals have life changing eye injuries. That is unacceptable.
Main meal: polish sausage, spinach vegetable Gyoza and some two day old fried rice which I wish I'd never eaten!
The photo is from the Oostvaardersdijk between Almere and Lelystad. It was a hot day but there was a cool breeze on top of the dijk.
